S_ForSoccer Match Day 2 Review of English Premier League (EPL) 2020/2021 Season Part 3
SOUTHAMPTON 2-5 Tottenham
Jose Mourinho aimed to avoid losing their second game
of the league when they visited Saint Mary’s stadium. Off the pitch, Tottenham
were buoyed by bringing old-boy Gareth Bale back to North London, albeit for a
season-long loan alongside left-back Reguilon from Madrid. The early exchanges
were marred with drama with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) correctly ruling
out a goal apiece for the sides. Late in the first half, Ings scored and Kane assisted
Son for an equaliser leaving the sides tied 1-1 at the break. Whatever Mourinho
told his charges seemed to work miracles as Harry Kane set up three more goals
for Son allowing the South Korean to net FOUR goals in the tie with Kane
scoring one more to make Ings late penalty a mere consolation as Spurs won 5-2
against Southampton to give them their first three points of the campaign while
Southampton lost their second match in as many attempts.
Aston Villa 1-0 Sheffield United
Aston Villa started their premier league campaign with
victory at home against a blunt Sheffield United side courtesy of a single goal
by Konsa struck midway through the second half. Sheffield saw a penalty saved
by debuting Villa keeper Martinez and also had a player send off in the tie. They
will need to improve both on their performance and results to avoid being
branded one-season wonder having played amazingly last season in a campaign that
saw them finish in the top half of the table.
Wolves 1-3 Manchester City
Manchester City were the last side to kick off the
premier league 2020/2021 season when they visited the Molineux stadium to face
the dangerous Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. Pep Guardiola, who was kicking off
his fifth campaign while managing the Etihad stadium-based outfit was looking
to guide the Cityzens to a 10th competitive opening day victory, a
feet no other side has ever achieved in the competition’s long storied history,
was aiming to begin the title hunt with a bang. Things started to go to plan
early on for the Manchester club when De Bruyne won a penalty and converted it
calmly to give them the lead. Phil Foden who has had a troubled break scored to
give them a 2-0 lead at the break. Wolves started the second half rejuvenated
and it wasn’t surprising when Jimenez netted past Ederson and looked to even
equalise barring their wastefulness in front of the goal. They were made to pay
for their wastefulness when Gabriel Jesus scored late in the game to ensure
Manchester city came up with all three points in an away fixture, they lost last
season, and three goals on a good Monday Night’s job away.
